They must identify the core functionality that users need from software programs. Anyways, I don't like my current position--more standard web dev. This is the best plan. I think there are a lot more of us out there than you think. But no, I didn't give a shit about what platform we used, what newfangled tech stack people wanted to use, or the nitty gritty implementation details of a feature someone else worked on. Not sure I could do anything else and enjoy it, but then again, I'm only a few years in, so who knows. Listen and soak up, and aim to learn something, some new best practice or technical trick, from every person you work with, growing your skills day by day. Some think that long term happiness is correlated with a life of engagement, whether it's professional or not. I hope it works out. I would like to retire from programming to be a writer, tbh. Everyone I know who did accounting has terrible jobs that pay at or below what a SE major makes after graduation. But I want to eventually work on something that I believe matters. I hate finishing projects because then I have to wait until I get another one to get that feeling back. I think really what made me hate my job was the expectation and the reality being vastly different for each other and me giving up so much because of what the expectation was. I wasn't friends with a single other comp sci major in school either. If actually doing your work is so painful that you hate it then maybe you are in the wrong industry.
