The sheer pain of reading those horrific incidences after which one doesn't even feel good to be a human, let alone one that is stuck with that as a history. It gives us an insight into the Divide and Rule policy followed by the British. Although the genre is fiction but when we read the book it feels as if the things are real and even after such a long time holds true. Bhisham Sahni won the Sahitya Akademi Award for Tamas in 1976. Story is about communal riots in villages/ small towns  prior to independence {around 1942}. Highlights details of wilful   inaction by the colonial administration in defusing the volatile situation until the tension reached threshold thereby tacitly allowing large scale massacre/  destruction. On the other hand it falls a bit short as a novel. This story is about the deception of Nathu, a sweeper residing in a frontier province in Nathu does not know of the evil plans of the Muslim politician who has paid him to cut a pig. Reading this book will be a pleasure to the history lovers and those who would like to know about the religions of India. He was the founder and chairman of 'SAHMAT', an organisation promoting cross-cultural understanding, founded in memory of the murdered theatre artist and activist Sahni's prolific career as a writer also included six other Hindi novels: Bhisham Sahni was one of the most prolific writers of Hindi literature.
