The piece that fits over the vent is too small to cover my whole vent but I have left the other type of vent cover that blows out into the room over it and seems to work fine, the only other thing that would be good would be to put magnets on the portion that fits over the vent. You can make your own out of an empty cereal box and it will work better. When I saw these extenders on Amazon I wondered if it would be a viable option.The only potential issue I see is that the plastic is pretty flimsy and if the volume of air moving into the return vent is sufficiently high it might cause the plastic to collapse and restrict the flow of air. I avoid that debate with my wife by just never bringing up the issue.
